Downtown Property Services Worker
Responsible for performing a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks related to the maintenance, repair and rehabilitation of City Municipal Service Districts. An employee in this class performs routine manual labor in the maintenance and upkeep of public facilities in the downtown Main Street and 7th Avenue Municipal Service Districts. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Downtown Property Maintenance Crew Leader and is evaluated by visual inspection of work, periodic meetings, compliance with safety procedures, and overall quantity and quality of work performed.
Essential Job Functions
- Works weekends to maintain cleanliness in Municipal Service Districts during peak season (May – October).
- May operate push mower, weed eater, pressure washer, backpack blower, pickup truck, vacuum machine, hedge trimmer, or other tools and equipment to maintain city property within the Municipal Service Districts.
- Cleans and maintains public spaces within the municipal service district, including but not limited to public restrooms, sidewalks, signs street furniture and waste receptacles and parking deck and surface lots.
- Assists in planting and maintaining plants in beds and hanging baskets in municipal service districts.
- Provides general information and assistance to downtown visitors and customers with basic understanding of customer service to assist visitors with parking and other general questions about downtown.
- Operates a pressure washer on sidewalks and furniture and garbage and recycling receptacles.
- Performs landscaping duties including but not limited to weeding, mulching and trimming beds in the municipal service districts.
- Assists with snow and ice removal within the Municipal Service Districts.
- Performs general maintenance on tables, chairs, benches, trash and recycling receptacles, including graffiti removal.
- Works on plumbing, pumps and irrigation systems, electrical systems.
- Assists with set-up, tear-down and cleaning for city sponsored special events.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED Equivalency; and one (1) year of experience in general maintenance of facilities and buildings; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Qualifications:
- Possession of a valid Class C Driver’s License to operate a motor vehicle. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.

- Knowledge of hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned area of work.
- Skills in the use of equipment to which assigned.

Physical Demands
Work in this classification is defined as heavy work requiring the physical exertion of in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, handling and repetitive motions. Work requires dexterity in the hands for typing and operation of standard office equipment and visual acuity is necessary to read handwritten and typewritten materials and to operate a computer terminal. Vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection of products, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Employee must have the stamina to work for extended periods some of which in emergency situations.
Work Environment
Work is primarily performed in outside environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold with snow and ice. Employee is subject to noise which may cause the employee to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. Employee is subject to vibration, such as exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body and is also subject to workplace hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts or exposure to chemicals, oils, fuels, and potential for blood borne pathogens in raw untreated sewage. Employee is subject to atmospheric conditions due to exposure to fumes, odors, dusts and oils. May work in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small areas of water lines, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia.
