Crystal Cauley Children's Garden
The Crystal's Children's Garden is dedicated in memory of Crystal Cauley; trailblazer, educator, and champion of community in all its forms. Crystal was a lifelong advocate of connecting people with nature, especially children. She was also an advocate for bird habitat conservation and worked on creating bird sanctuaries throughout the City of Hendersonville. Her memory lives on.
How To Get Involved
How did the garden get started?
Located adjacent to Sullivan Park in the historic 7th Avenue district, this community garden was started in 2011 with a partnership between the City of Hendersonville and a few dedicated community members to use City land for Hendersonville’s first community garden in the Green Meadows community.
What is the history of the community?
Brooklyn is a historically Black neighborhood established in the late 19th century that grew into a thriving community being the center of Black life and culture. In the 1960's the community was renamed as Green Meadows. To preserve and honor the legacy of the original community, this garden is named the Brooklyn Community Garden.
Beginning in 2023, the garden embarked on an extensive expansion and revitalization effort. Key aspects included a perimeter fence for safety and reduce animal intrusions, ADA and childrens beds to ensure the garden is accessible to everyone, pollinator plants, fruit trees, a community pergola, and more. In total, the project secured more than $55,000 in funding from various non-profits and City of Hendersonville funds. Key community members were also integral in making this project a success.
